5 Things You Can do to Reduce Period Cramps

  1. LIGHT EXERCISE before your period. For those who experience constipation, breast tenderness and/or mood changes before the period, you might be experiencing qi stagnation. Light exercise before the period can help to move stagnate qi. This is not for those who experience fatigue, diarrhea before or during the period and/or heavy bleeding. This is not a time meant for high intensity work outs as it can also deplete the qi that is needed for the shedding of the uterine lining. Instead consider walking and a slow yoga class during this time of your cycle.

  2. WARM UP and avoid cold before and during the period. Avoid iced drinks, raw foods and activities that expose you to the cold. Keeping the body warm, maintains good circulation and will result in better flow and less pain. Those who have more severe cramps, should try to avoid cold drinks and foods in general.

  3. GINGER TEA is warming, dispersing and helps to circulate qi. Drinking ginger tea warms your abdominal area while also supporting your digestion. Dried ginger is stronger than fresh ginger. For those who tend to run hot - avoid using dried ginger.

  4. ACUPUNCTURE the week before your period can prevent qi stagnation and support digestion to help prevent cramps and other unwanted PMS or period symptoms. Regular visits can help to address other period or menstrual cycle imbalances.

  5. RESTING during your period allows your body to adjust to the shedding process. Doing too much during this time can deplete your qi and blood reserves and contribute to a more difficult period in your next cycle. Take it easy on your bleeding days.
